I’m spending the entire month of June in Florida with my family.

We were in the Universal Studios’ City Walk, as we decided to go to Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant.

I’ve never been to that restaurant, and since I’m a seafood lover, that’s a great place to visit.

The food was excellent, the service was really outstanding, at great prices too.

Dan, our waiter would stop by literally every 5 minutes or so, just to check up on us.

But here’s an interesting observation.

This guy was so smooth like no other waiter I’ve ever seen.

As I’m in the process of buying a new house and having to deal with a whole slew of people, it amazes me how few people actually do what they’re supposed to do.

Today’s post is about excellence.  Whether you’re in selling or marketing or both, you have to deal with people.  Even if you sell through a website it’s people that buy from you, not machines.

I’ve been fortunate to have spent over a decade in personal one on one direct sales, which taught me some very important lessons about this concept of excellence.

In today’s economic climate, in fact in any economic climate, people are very cautious about dealing with strangers. That means no matter how great your product or service is, you have to overcome 3 major hurdles.

1. You have to find the right target market.

2. You have to convince the potential purchaser that your product or service will give them the results that they really want to buy.

3. You have to convince them that you or your company will deliver as you promise. In other words, you have to develop a certain degree of trust with them.

I’d like to share with you another powerful business attraction concept.

When I first started in the financial services business 13 years ago, being at very young age for that kind of a business, I was happy that anyone would see me.

I wasn’t focusing on trying to get some big accounts. If someone simply opened an account with me, and invested $25 a month, I was excited.

Of course as time went on, I moved on to bigger accounts. But the habit of providing good service regardless whether the person had invested a lot of money or little stayed with me.

Over the years, a lot of the people who originally started with small amounts with me, invested a very significant amounts of money.

As a matter of fact in all of my career, some of the best and biggest customers came from these small initial accounts.

The best form of advertising is by word of mouth.  Nothing can replace a happy client or customer speaking highly of you and recommending you.

In direct sales it’s fairly simple to just ask for referrals.  You still have to earn them though, but if you professionally ask, and expect to get them you will.  Plant that seed early on in your presentation.

But in direct marketing, and online marketing, it’s a bit different.  However, you can still ask, and in return give them something of value.  Provide a valuable resource in exchange for 2 or 3 leads that they can refer you to.

This is a great strategy, because again, nothing beats a happy customer vouching for you on your behalf to someone they know.

You’re basically borrowing credibility of that person.

To attract more business success, keep this principle in mind.  So many businesses miss this, but ask yourself, how can I get referrals and what value will I provide in return for this?

When you pose a question, your subconscious mind goes to work to bring you the answer.

In my financial services business, for 10 years I never advertised, and completely built my book of business through referrals.

I believe that when you treat people with the utmost respect, and provide the best that you possibly can for them, they reciprocate and treat you the same, helping you as well.

Keep this in mind, as you’re building your business.

The most important skill to develop in communicating with people is listening.

Understanding human nature is critical is selling and marketing of any product or service, whether you do it face to face or not.

People are primarily interested in themselves.  People like to be heard and made feel important.

The worst salespeople on the planet are the ones that do all the talking and never stop to listen to what their prospect says.

In my personal selling career, I’ve made a habit of when I first sit down with someone to talk about my services, I simply ask them questions, then sit back and listen.

If you listen closely enough, people will tell you EXACTLY what motivates them and what you need to do to sell them.

People often want to know, how to stay motivated while going for a big goal, and it takes longer than you wanted to.

In my opinion goal setting is a very powerful thing.  But you have to be careful though.  When setting goals, and putting your target dates, if you don’t hit your goal by the deadline, that you don’t go beating yourself up over it.

Goals are powerful because they set the course and they set the energy in motion.  But remember that we attract we feel, so if thinking of a goal and having that deadline puts any kind of pressure, where you feel uncomfortable and it makes you think that you won’t hit it, then instead of motivating you, it does the opposite, it depresses you to think about your goal.

Writing down your goals, and thinking of them should be fun and exciting, and the minute it doesn’t feel that way anymore, it’s time to adjust or change the goal.

Here are 9 things you can do to market your business right now:
(Depending on your business some may or may not be applicable)

1. Join a business networking organization, like BNI or LBN, you can find a local chapter by googling it. (You can also start your own chapter of these organizations)

2. Join your local Chamber of Commerce.

3. Joint Venture with other business owners. If your business is local, then find a local business that’s not in direct competition with you, but serves the same market.

Here’s an example. We have a local restaurant that my wife and I go to all the time. They have a special, when you order 2 entrees and drinks, they include 2 movie tickets to a nearby movie theater, no restrictions on the tickets. Brilliant!

People hate to be sold on anything.

How many times have you heard that? Well, I’m here to tell you it’s a lie.  How about this one:

“People hate to be sold, but love to buy”. This statement is a half-truth.
It’s true, people do love to buy things for themselves and as gifts. But I’ll show you that they also love to be sold. In fact everyone loves to be “sold” because when people are being “sold” on something they are following and doing something that gets them closer to what they “want”.

But anyone who starts out in business may believe that “people hate to be sold” is true and make decisions that effect their business based on this misinformation.

On the other side of this coin, there are also a lot of entrepreneurs who hate to sell. They hate being pushy or believe they need to be pushy in order to make sales. That’s also not true. If you’re in this category, then this short post will be like a breath of fresh air to you.
